Add Surname in Your Documents- 3 Steps

Most of the people ask us “How to add surname in your documents”… Even some people think that it is not possible to add surname in documents once we have already made our documents. So, the main question here is, Is it possible to add surname in public documents without any document or ID proof having your surname?

The answer is Big YES.

Let’s make it easy with an example;

Surjit is a person from Delhi, who has already got his public document with named Surjit in given name section of document and his Surname section in his document is empty because in all the public and academics documents of Surjit he was having only Single name “Surjit”.

Now, Surjit wants to add his Surname “Gupta” to his document but does not have any single document having “Gupta” written with his name as Surname. He needs to add his surname mandatorily to get PR of ABCD country.

So, would he still be able to add Surname in his documents?

Again the answer is YES. It does not matter if he does not have Surname in any of his ID cards or public documents.

BUT… HOW?

Before knowing the steps, we must learn the documents required to get your surname added to your documents:

  • 2 ID Proofs with Old name (Without Surname).

Yes, only 2 ID proofs without surname is sufficient to get your surname added in your documents.

What are those 3 Steps?

Now let’s learn the whole process. This process will take 30-40 days.

Step 1: Affidavit

In the first step, you need to make an affidavit and get it notarized on Rs.10 stamp paper, and your first step is completed.

But, if you are taking the Surname which is not added with your father’s name then you need to get that same affidavit attested by SDM of your area and you’re done.

Step 2: Ad in Newspaper

Now, with the help of that affidavit, you need to give one name change Ad in any of your state’s newspapers and the language of the Ad matter should be in English.

Only 1 Ad is sufficient.

Step 3: Name Change File & Submission

Now, this is the last step and very crucial step. For this step you might need someone who is expert in this field who can draft this file for you. You may get help of any lawyer from your area as well. This file consists:

  1. Request Letter
  2. 2 Witnesses Performa
  3. Digital CD (Name change matter in .docs file)
  4. CD Certificate
  5. Govt. fees receipt of Rs.1100

Once the file gets ready, you need to submit that file to the Controller of Publications office, Civil, Lines, Delhi. Once you submit the file, your name change notification will be out in the next 3-4 weeks.

What is Estimated Cost?

How much this process will cost? Again a most asked question…

1. Affidavit will cost your Rs. 10 (Stamp Paper) + Rs. 50 (By Notary)

2. Newspaper Ad: Approx Rs. 1000 (Varies according to your area and Newspaper).

3. File Making: If you take help of any expert then they generally charge somewhere from 2500 to 4500.

4. Govt. fees receipt of Rs.1100

Approximate it becomes in total: Rs. 4700 to Rs. 5000.
